How to troubleshoot a faulty power point
Faulty power points are a frustrating and potentially dangerous issue you can face in your home, but before calling us out there, there are some things to look out for so you can take to diagnose and potentially fix a faulty power point.
Firstly, have a look to see if the power point is properly fitted to the wall itself. If the point is feeling loose, it may not be connected properly, which could be the issue. Simply tighten the screws on the power point to see if this fixes the problem.
Next up, check the point is getting any power. If you have the tools, use a voltmeter to check for signs of power, only do this if you are confident in doing so and can proceed safely. If the outlet is still without power, it could be the wiring or circuits are done for. Check the fuse box to see if anything has switched off or looks different, if you are not confident checking, call us. If the fuse box and fuses are fine, there may be an issue with the wiring or the point itself, which is the right time to contact us.
If the outlet is getting power but continues to not work, it may be the power point itself that is faulty. Check the point for damage, such as cracks or burn marks, which can be signs of overheating or arcing. If you see any damage, it’s important to replace the outlet right away.
Finally, if you checked everything else and the outlet is still not working, it’s time to replace it. To do this simply turn off the power to the outlet, remove the cover plate and the outlet itself, and then connect the wires to the new outlet. However, if you’re not comfortable doing this yourself, call us for help.
Always be alert when working with electricity, electrical work can be very dangerous, be certain you have turned off the power to the point before trying to work on it at all, and if you’re unsure if it is the correct fuse, turn off all the power to house completely, if you are still unsure of yourself, please call us for help. Taking the proper precautions and troubleshooting steps can keep your electrical system running smoothly and safely.
